John Rodgerson was born at Westerton, not far from the River Wear, in 1888 and somehow found his way to Penshaw Staithes.
He married my grandmother and they had four children, one of whom, Stanley, went to school with 'Little Bobby'.  My grandfather was a foreshift overman at Butney Colliery until closure took him to the 'New Pit' and Lady Beatrice Terrace in New Herrington.
