SPOUT LANE was initially named NEW ROAD
Note the woman wearing long dark clothing, she's passing the steps to 'The Steps'.
The large building was the Washington & District Working Men's Club, known locally as 'The Middle Club'.
When it closed down this building housed a private members club - 'The Teachers'.

Spout Lane was once a busy thoroughfare from Houghton-le-Spring to New Washington.
Up the bank: 'The Middle Club', 'The Steps' and The Miners Rest.
The Underpass was built just beyond the lorry.

Roads joining Victoria Road:  Manor Road and Front Street.   The back street led to the Fire Station.
The centre road is where the cyclist joins Spout Lane at the end of Western Terrace.
