Washington's Infamous District Numbers

THE BALLAD OF GEORGE WASHINGTON

1. I’ll tell ye arhl what happened upon Washington New Town,
I saw a chap upon a horse, he rode it up and down.
His claes were arhl auld fashioned.  ‘Good-day to ye,' he sez.
He had the look o' Geordie Washington ... so I asked him if he wez.
He sez, ‘I cannot tell a lie.'  He had an honest face.
He sez, ‘Yes, I’m George Washington.  I’ve come to see the place.’

Now they say that I’d been drinking, but I’d just had two or three,
And I tell ye George Washington’s ghost came back and spoke to me.

2. ‘Can ye direct me,' Geordie sez, ‘to Washington Auld Hall.
That’s my ancestral home, ye knaa, I thowt I’d mek a call.’
I sez, ‘It’s doon Spout Lane, but mind, there’s nee through road there noo,
Just follow arhl the signs that sez to Districts three, fower, seven and two.’
He sez, ‘I cannot tell a lie, ye’ve answered me right well, but I’m a bit confused.’
I sez, ‘I get confused me sel.’

Now they say that I’d been drinking, but I’d just had two or three,
And I tell ye George Washington’s ghost came back and spoke to me.

3. So off he went, but he was back the following night once more.
He sez, ‘I’ve been to Usworth, Blackfell, Biddick and Shiney Row.
I passed the Post House fower times.’  I sez, ‘Ye wad, of course.’
He sez, ‘I’ve even gorra parkin ticket on me bloomin horse!’
He sez, ‘I cannot tell a lie.’  He had an honest face.
He sez, ‘It’s arhl too much for me, I couldn’t find the place.’

Now they say that I’d been drinking, but I’d just had two or three,
And I tell ye George Washington’s ghost came back and spoke to me.

4. ‘I got off,' he sez to me, ‘in Districts six and seven.’
There’s ower many signs aboot ... it’s nought like this in heaven!’
I sez, ‘Noo, I was born here, and I knaa the district well.
Just come alang wi’ me, bonny lad.’  Then I got lost me sel!
He sez, ‘I cannot tell a lie, I’ll niver stand the pace.
I’m gannin back to the U.S.A., I divvent like this place!’

Now they say that I’d been drinking, but I’d just had two or three,
And I tell ye George Washington’s ghost came back and spoke to me.
