SANDBANK OPPOSITE HIGH BARMSTON FARM
A Coxgreen Resident once told me that she used to cross the river at low tide to High Barmston Farm to get
a bottle of milk for her Mam. It would seem that the River Wear was once fordable in that area.
The Roman name for the River Wear was The Vedra. Its named that way on very old maps.
It's also said that a lost Roman Road may have crossed the river at Coxgreen.
Could this be that ancient crossing point?

COCK'S GREEN
No obvious sign of a 'Barmston West Farm' / High Barmston Farm on the 1737 Map,
so it must have been built after this date.

COXGREEN and HIGH BARMSTON FARM
Crofton's Quay, 'Barmston West Farm' and Nicholas Mushens Sand.
Nicholas Crofton (Senior) owned 'Barmston West Farm' many years before the Potts Family.
Hence the name of the nearby Quay, just upstream in the River Wear.
A few years ago, a lady called Mushens spoke to me at the Ferry House. She knew from family tree work that her forebears were
Keelmen on the river. She was delighted when I told her that a sandbank in the river had been named after her family.
According to author Taylor Potts - see Addendum below - The Mushens lived
in a cottage opposite 'Barmson West Farm' and The Sandbank, where the stables are today.
